Forest School
An area of the school field was set aside in April 2014 to enable it to be developed into a Forest School site. Willow was planted to act as the boundary of the site. Different areas of the site were added which included a muddy patch for digging and looking for worms and other mini beasts, a camp fire circle for small fires to cook marshmallows over, balancing beams to practice walking along, climbing over and under, also a rope swing which is available on each Forest School session. Two newly created mini beast hotels were added to natural structures to attract more mini beasts and insects to the site.
In Forest School we have a rope swing hanging from our Maple tree. The children enjoy taking it in turns to help push each other. They are brilliant at ensuring that they are safe by adding a circle of safety around the swing. They have been experimenting with how they can play on it.

During one of the sessions two boys created their own mini beast hotel, adding on different features to keep the mini beasts safe from predators. Finding mini beasts. Within the Forest School sessions the children have found many different mini beasts from different lengths of worms, black ants, woodlice, snails, slugs and even some spiders. Making mini beast hotels. We have made some mini beast hotels using some logs that they been collected around the School site, to attract more wildlife into the Forest School site.
During their time in Forest School the children have been learning how to use a flint and stricker to create a spark that lights the cotton wool. After much practise the children are able to do this sucessfully and understand the safety rules around doing this activity. During one session we had a fire in which the children were able to toast their own marsh mallow or twist bread, which they really enjoyed doing. As part of the RSPB big bird watch the children made some bird seed cakes to attrach more birds into the Forest School site. They enjoyed making the cakes using lard and bird seed mixed together and then put into yogurt pots. Finding different places around the site in which to hang them up in. They were really please to see some Jawdaws on the main School field. During the sessions the children have been designing their balancing beam course within the site and helping each other to complete the course. They have used good communication skills to explain the best way to balance and good team work as well.
