"I found abseiling quite challenging and the hardest part was climbing over the bar at the top of the tower as it was really high. Also leaning backwards to ensure your feet were level." Explained Yousef Esha said "I really enjoyed doing little jumps down the tower and seeing how many jumps you could do it in." "I felt really proud of yourself when I completed the abseil." Scientists, Technicians, Engineers and Mathematicians in Year 4During STEM Week, we have been discovering about various aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths. We kicked the week off with Crystal Maze activities where we solved maths problems from different countries. On Tuesday, we learnt about the periodic table of elements and created posters about the chemicals. We also we learnt lots of facts about Mars and then we had to decide what 6 items we would take with us to land on the surface. Following this, we designed, made and tested a landing vehicle - with more or less success. Lots of astronaut eggs were destroyed but we learnt what makes a good space vessel. (And what doesn't!) Wednesday morning each child took part in a workshop, lead by a teacher and joined by others from all across the year groups. The workshops included, amongst many others, the Giant's Toothpaste, Space Art, Volcanoes and Astronaut Training. Two companies visited us with their experts: first we solved maths problems and then Science Oxford taught us about light in the universe. We had loads of fun whilst expanding our knowledge of our world. Here are some of our photos from the week: On Friday 29th January Year 4 visited the Living Rain Forest in Hampton Norreys, near Newbury, as part of their topic Chocolate Rain Forest. During the visit we met and observed many different plants from the banana tree, Mexican Breadfruit and the Hibiscus flowers and plant. Learning about the Vanilla Orchid discovering that only bees could pollinate it or if Humans tried it would take over 100 times to be pollinated by hand. Making it the second most expensive spice after Saffron. Meeting many different animals from Goeldi's monkeys, Azara's Agouti, Harry the Armadillo and the two toed Sloth. There was also birds, reptiles and fish within the glasshouses.
Tema from Rowan Class has written a fantastic story and has presented it using PowerPoint. Well done Tema!
